This week’s post is a bit different from the usual: It’s a refashioned pair of shorts made using McCalls M6756 from a dress I stitched up way back. I’m really excited to share it with you because I think it’s so cute, stylish & chic!

Why Refashion?

I made this dress a couple of years ago for my aunt’s 50th birthday. It was one of the first dresses I had ever made, so needless to say that in looking at it now, it wasn’t the best work I’ve done. Plus,  I’d worn it a couple of times already and doubted that I’d wear it again…it just sat in my closet untouched which was such a shame because this beautiful pink jacquard material was wasting away, so I decided to do something with it!

Deconstruction & Construction:

I carefully took the dress apart, tossing the bodice out while salvaging the zipper and the skirt portion. I made these shorts using the half of skirt.

To create these shorts, I used M6756 from McCalls. I excluded the pockets & lining and raised the waist by 1″. I also flipped the side the zipper is on because I wanted it to be the way my jeans are. And finally, I included a zipper fly.

While this pattern is fairly simple to use, I would recommend a muslin or practising on a cheaper fabric like I did here so you don’t make your mistakes on good fabric.

Final Thoughts:

I love the fabric of these shorts. I makes it so chic and pretty! I’ve found that buying shorts like this can be rather expensive, so it’s not something I would typically buy. But being able to get some good use out of this material and turn it from a dress into shorts (with leftover material!) makes me feel like I’m really putting my skills to use!

  1. Those shorts are so cute! There’s something really satisfying about cutting up an old creation to make a new one.
